Jaguar has given the first look inside its upcoming Type 01 electric grand tourer, revealing a cabin built around a full-length central spine and a deliberately restrained approach to screens.
The spine divides the cabin into four individual occupant spaces and carries a brass-inspired finish that is repeated along the tops of the doors. Jaguar said the layout takes an idea developed for its concept car into production.
The driver sits low in the car, while the interior uses colours and textures influenced by travertine stone and textiles. Jaguar has also avoided the large, screen-heavy dashboard treatment now common in many new cars.
Instead, the Type 01 gets a slim dashboard with digital functions designed to appear when required. A ClearSight digital rear-view display is positioned centrally at the base of the windscreen, roughly level with the exterior mirrors. Concealed storage areas and other hidden-until-needed technology are also part of the cabin design.
Chief interior designer Thomas Holden said the longitudinal layout was chosen as an alternative to the horizontal themes normally used across car dashboards. The central spine is the main visual element linking the front and rear sections of the cabin.
Type 01 is a four-door battery-electric GT and will be the first production Jaguar based on the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture. It is being designed, developed and built in the UK.
A Type 01 prototype will appear during Monterey Car Week before reaching the Pebble Beach Concours on Aug 16. Jaguar will fully reveal the car in New York on Oct 6.
