Mercedes-Benz says its updated S-Class is the most comprehensively refreshed version within a single model generation, with more than 50% of the car newly developed, updated or refined.

The brand ties the update to 140 years since Carl Benz’s 1886 invention of the automobile, describing the S-Class as the modern expression of its engineering and craftsmanship, and the familiar “Welcome home.” feel.

Visually, the new S-Class exudes a stronger presence.

For the first time, buyers can specify an optionally illuminated Mercedes star on the bonnet, paired with an illuminated grille that Mercedes said is around 20% larger and detailed with redesigned, three-dimensional chrome stars.

The lighting theme continues with next-generation Digital Light headlamps featuring a new twin-star design and micro-LED technology.

Mercedes said the system delivers around a 40% larger high-resolution illumination field than the predecessor set-up.

At the rear, newly designed tail-lamps use three chrome-framed signature stars, while an integrated side-sill light projector can cast “Mercedes-Benz” lettering on the ground next to the car as part of a lighting scheme.

The electronics are also pivotal. Mercedes said the new S-Class is powered by MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System), a purpose-built “supercomputer” that runs every vehicle domain and links systems into one ecosystem.

Connected to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, MB.OS enables over-the-air updates for numerous functions, with the company positioning it as the base for both MB.Drive and MBUX.

On assistance systems, Mercedes said expanded sensor technology and new computer architecture enable next-generation driving and parking functions under MB.Drive.

MB.Drive Assist Pro is said to support seamless point-to-point driving even in dense urban traffic, with availability to begin in China followed by the US later, and other markets once regulations permit.

The car comes with MB.Drive Parking Assist improvements, including earlier space detection, support for angled parking, assistance when exiting a space after manual parking, and a reverse manoeuvring function that Mercedes said will arrive first in China.

The cabin is pitched as both lounge and workplace.

Mercedes listed a standard MBUX Superscreen and the latest MBUX with an AI-based “Hey Mercedes” virtual assistant designed for more natural dialogue.

It also claimed integration of multiple AI tools in one system, alongside a revised Zero Layer interface and navigation features described as MBUX Surround Navigation based on Google Maps.

For rear passengers, Mercedes highlights a “First-Class rear compartment” option, MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment with dual 13.1-inch displays, detachable rear remote controls, and integrated video conferencing.

Mercedes also pointed to comfort and wellbeing touches, including a heated seat belt, Digital Vent Control and an electric air filter with Energizing Air Control.

Safety remains a big emphasis, with an enhanced adaptive restraint system, Pre-Safe Impulse belt pretensioners and up to 15 airbags.

Powertrains span electrified petrol and diesel engines, a V8 option and a plug-in hybrid, matched with Airmatic or optional E-Active Body Control, plus standard rear-axle steering at 4.5° with an optional 10°.

Ordering opens online from today, with the S 350 d 4Matic Saloon listed from €121,356.20 (RM571,000).

Right after the new S-Class world premiere today, Mercedes-Benz will run a “140 PLACES” drive across six continents, visiting a symbolic 140 locations and encouraging fans, customers and owners’ clubs to add their own celebrations throughout the year.

Three new S-Class Saloons will cover more than 50,000km across Europe, South America, North America, Australia, Asia and Africa, with the route mixing brand milestones and famous stretches such as Route 66 ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2026, plus megacities including Buenos Aires, Shanghai and Sydney.

“Our ‘140 PLACES’ journey will see the new S-Class visiting customers and fans all around the world, bringing the Mercedes-Benz heritage to life in every corner we reach. We’re truly looking forward to meeting people in six continents, celebrating together and sharing highlights on our brand channels. We can’t wait to catch up with you along the way,” Mercedes-Benz AG vice president digital & communications and investor relations Christina Schenck said.

The drive is planned to end in Stuttgart in October 2026, and Mercedes said it can be followed via a digital hub on the Mercedes-Benz Community site and brand channels including mercedes-benz.com, YouTube and Instagram.
